International Science Olympiads

International Science Olympiads are intended for (senior) pupils at secondary schools all over the world.

It is concluded in three phases.

1. Regional Science Olympiad (RSO)  

a) All school students of class XI and class XII are eligible to appear for RSO. The Regional Coordinators may on their discretion admit students of lower classes also. RSO is a three hour written test.

b) The regional Co-ordinator has the freedom to prepare his/her own question paper.

c) On the basis of RSO, a certain number from each region is selected to appear for the Stage 2 examination.

d) The selected students from each region may include a maximum of 6 students of class XII.

e) The Regional Co-ordinator ensures that at least one centre is provided in each district of his/her region.

2. National Science Olympiad  (NSO)  

Science Olympiad foundation is a non governmental organisation established in the year 1998 with the aim of promoting science  and to help improve the standards of science education in India . National Science Olympiad is conducted by Science Olympiad Foundation every year.

Structure of the Competition

       The National Science Olympiad is an academic and scholastic aptitude competition encouraging learning in Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. The competition has been divided into two levels.

Level I: (Qualifying)

1. The level I competition is a objective-type test of 90 minutes' duration comprising 75 questions for Class VI to XII.

2. The question paper consists of five parts -Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology & General Intelligence for lower classes i.e., VI to X and Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics/Biology for 'class XI and XII.

3. There is a separate question paper for classes VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI and XII.

Level ll: (FINAL)

Candidates from each class shortlisted on the basis of their performance in Level I will have to appear for a test at the second stage of the Olympiad. General awareness, excellence in extra-curricular activities, communication skills and in-depth understanding of MathematicS, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at , their respective class level will be the basis for selecting the ultimate winners.

Eligibility and Registration

The Olympiad is open to the student of Classes  6th to 12th (both Inclusive). Registration has to be done through the respective schools of the participants in the prescribed pro-forma sent to the school.

Registrations are open from July onwards

Medium and Syllabus

The medium of the test is English. The syllabus are prescribed by the , ICSE/ISC and various State Boards of Examination will i be followed for setting of the test papers.

Time and Venue

The Level I of the Olympiad is conducted in January, in the school premises of the participants during working hours. However, the Level II test will be conducted at designated testing centers in various towns/ cities across the country.

3. International Science Olympiad (ISO)

a) The six-member team selected at the end of a training camp accompanied by a leader and a deputy leader represent the country at the International Science Olympiad.

b) Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) finances international travel of the 8-member Indian delegation; while NBHM (DAE) finances the entire in-country programme and other expenditure connected with international participation.

c) All the six students of the Indian team automatically qualify for the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan nurture programme), provided they pursue careers in basic science.

  4. IBO: The International Biology Olympiad
  5. IAO: The International Astronomy Olympiad
  6. IOI : The International Olympiad in Informatics.
