About IIT Hyderabad

IIT Hyderabad is the eighth IIT in the country which started functioning from August 2008. It aims learning through practice and research. The institute is on the road to creating the infrastructure, ambience and culture necessary for the pursuit of creative ideas.

The government of Japan will participate in the formation of Indian Institute of Technology. Hyderabad through academic, technical and financial collaboration.

IIT Madras is the mentor institute. IIT Hyderabad follows a similar curriculum as that of IIT Madras. As of now, some of the faculty of IIT Madras will be teaching courses at IIT Hyderabad.

Location of the Institute:

Currently, the institute in its temporary premises in the quiet residential campus of Ordnance Factory, Medak (OFMK) at Yeddumailaram (Medak District, A.P), about 45km from the heart of Hyderabad city. The requisite infrastructure, namely hostels, classrooms, offices, recreation, sports and medical facilities are all located within the OFMK Estate.

The permanent campus will be located on the National Highway 9 at Kandi village (near Sangareddy town, in Medak district, A.P). The 218 hectare land is expected to become operational with its first set of buildings and structures by 2010, the third academic year onwards students are expected to move to join the permanent campus.

Campus of IIT Hyderabad:

On the temporary campus, about 1200msquare of Research laboratory space has been acquired. Generic research equipment are being acquire as central facilities that can be shared by faculty colleagues of different disciplines. High performance computing facility for analytical work, mechanical workshops for research specimen fabrication, and electronic access of library resources are the other facilities being created./P>

The library, which now has textbook material in about 1000 titles, would add a fully functional reference library with subscriptions to online sournab.

The laboratories and workshops are all set up to meet the needs of all first year B.Tech students. Labs and workshops for the 2nd year students are currently being built.

The new campus would have a hospital, a township, academic hostel and residential zones, sports and recreation facilities, a school, banks and shopping facilities. About 1000 plus families are expected to live on the IIT campus once ready. Eventually, it would have 10 departments and about 5,000 students and about 500 faculty at all levels to maintain a 1:10 faculty to student ratio.
