About IIT Bombay
IIT Bombay, set up by an Act of Parliament, was established in 1958, at Powai, a
northern suburb of Mumbai. Today the Institute is recognised as one of the
centres of academic excellence in the country. Over the years, there has been
dynamic progress at IIT Bombay in all academic and research activities, and a
parallel improvement in facilities and infrastructure, to keep it on par with
the best institutions in the world. Institutes in positions of excellence grow
with time. The ideas and ideals on which such institutes are built evolve and
change with national aspirations, national perspectives, and trends world -
wide.
Location of the Institute:
IIT Bombay is located at Powai, which is an eastern suburb in the North-Eastern
part of Mumbai. Mumbai has one of the most efficient and reliable public
transport network. One can travel by Autorickshaws / Taxis to reach IIT from
the nearest stations(Autorickshaws, however do not go further south than Sion
and Bandra). For longer distance, you can use either the BEST Bus Network or
the Mumbai Local train System. International flights land at Sahar Airport
which is about 7 kms from IIT. The Domestic Airport- SantaCruz is about 10 kms.
Pre paid taxis are available at the Airports. Autorickshaws are also available
for IIT.
Campus of IIT Mumbai:
IIT Bombay is a small township in itself. Consciously developed, the campus has
retained and increased its green cover, rich in natural flora and fauna. The
campus is connected to the city proper, an hour's distance through buses and
local trains. However, most facilities are available on campus itself,
including a bank, a shopping centre, two excellent schools for children, and a
well equipped hospital. All students and most faculty live on campus, in
student hostels and IIT staff quarters. The peaceful atmosphere of the campus
belies the full range of activities going on that complement academic life.
