History

Talent for innovation, intellectual and mental alertness and professional competence are the prime requisites of an engineering leader. Realising the need for highly trained engineers of international quality for  nation building activities Indian Institutes of Technology were set up through acts of parliament.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur was the oldest Institute set up. Later on in 1960s, IITs were set up at Delhi, Kanpur, Madras and Bombay. Faculty of technology of Banaras Hindu University was also  upgraded as an IIT. In 90s, IIT was set up at Guwahati to cater to the needs of north east India. In year 2002, another university of National and International repute Roorkee University was upgraded as IIT Roorkee.

Indian school of mines, Dhanbad another institute involved in engineering  education also got its admission routed through the joint entrance examination of IITs.

All these Institutions are known for providing quality technological and scientific education and for research in frontier areas. The environment at these institutions is highly conductive for
