Even though the ministry of HRD, the officiating ministry of IITs takes every step to create awareness about IIT-JEE through newspaper advertisements and field posters (sent to schools), the technicalities of IIT-JEE are largely unknown to a majority of rural students of India. The general knowledge about IIT-JEE among school teachers and general education trainers lack the intricacies of the examination.

IIT-JEE is a national level examination conducted for admission to IITs at Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Bombay, Delhi, Roorkee, Guwahati, Institute of Technology (IT-BHU) and I.S.M. Dhanbad. Since year 2000, IITs have been following a two tier examination known as screening and main examination. The screening examination will test the proficiency of the aspirants in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in a objective type test of 3 hours duration with equal weightage. The screened students are subjected to a descriptive test of 6 hours duration (2 hours for each). The students who are declared qualified are given a rank called All India Rank. The qualified students are then advised to appear for a personal counseling session to determine the availability of seats and branches in different disciplines of various IITs. IT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad. A final offer of admission in made to the students after the counseling session is over.
