Eligibility:
For admission to any of the Integrated first degree programmes, the candidate
should have passed the 12th examination of the 10+2 system from a recognized
Central/ State board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and
Mathematics. Since the medium of instruction at BITS is English, candidates
should have adequate proficiency in English. Further, the candidate should have
obtained a minimum of aggregate 80% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
subjects in 12th examination, with at least 60% marks in each of the Physics,
Chemistry, and Mathematics subjects.
Admissions will be made purely on merit. The merit position of the candidate
will be based on the score obtained by the candidate in the BITSAT-2005.
Students who are appearing in 12th examination in 2005 are eligible to
appear in BITSAT-2005. However, their eligibility for admission is
subject to fulfilling the requirement of minimum marks in 12th examination, as
mentioned above. Since admission is highly competitive and the admission
process has to keep all the students on the same level playing ground, the
Institute's merit list for admission will only contain those students who have
passed the 12th examination in 2005.
Any candidate who has passed the 12th examination in previous years and has not
appeared in any examination higher than 12th, will be considered for admission
only if the explanation for this gap is on genuine grounds like medical etc.
and this will be done on a case by case basis after the case is fully examined
by the admission committee.
Candidates who have passed 12th examination in previous years and have already
joined any other educational institution for higher studies will be considered
under 'Advanced
standing' basis
Admission with Advanced Standing
When a candidate for any programme in the three tiers of education of the
Institute comes with a preparation beyond the minimum requirement for admission
in that programme, the admission of such a candidate is handled under the
flexibility 'admission with advanced standing'. For example, a student who has
passed the 12 th examination of the 10+2 system and has joined any other
educational institute for higher studies can compete for admission to BITS,
Pilani only under the clause of 'Admission with advanced standing'. This
admission will be determined on a case by case basis taking into consideration
the candidate's performance in latest examination and the type of courses that
the candidate has already completed after 12 th, to decide whether the
candidate can be considered for admission under advanced standing as well as to
decide the type of credits for the courses the candidate has already completed.
If a student has already joined BITS, Pilani for a particular programme, he/she
is not eligible to write BITSAT-2005 to seek admission afresh. Such students
can only apply for a transfer from one programme to another as per the existing
'transfer' flexibility of the Institute and the decision will be based on the
performance of the student at BITS. The same dispensation will be applicable
for students from other institutes applying to BITS under 'advanced standing'.
When such a student applies to BITS, the Institute will verify the performance
of the student in that Institute. If the performance is not through a
public/university examination, the student has to wait until he/she gets the
results, for the Institute to take a decision on the student's application.
While the decision in such cases are done on a case by case basis,
simultaneously the Institute will also inform the decision regarding the
advanced credit that will be awarded for the courses the student has already
completed. Since admission to BITS, Pilani is highly competitive, the number of
seats available under this flexibility will be small and only exceptionally
meritorious students can expect to compete under the clause of 'admission under
advanced standing'.
Those who wish to apply under the above scheme, should wait till the formal
announcement calling for application for admission to BITS Pilani is released,
some time in May 2005.
