About ISM Dhanbad

The Indian School of Mines was formally opened by His excellency the Viceroy Lord
Irwin on 9th December 1926 and the general work of the School commenced on the 10th
Dec 1926 in its premises at Dhanbad with Dr D Penman as the first Principal. On
the completion of the first 25 years of its existence in 1951 the Silver Jubilee
celebrations were inaugurated by Dr Rajendra Prasad, the then President of India,
who gave thereby a fresh fillip to this Institution. The School had celebrated its
Golden Jubilee in 1976 and Platinum Jubilee in 2001.
Location
The Institution was located at Dhanbad in order to facilitate the mining education
to be in close relation with the Mining Industry. For training in Geology, the province
of Bihar and its surroundings are unrivalled in their variety of geological formations,
in the multiplicity of structural and field characteristics and also in the diversity
and richness of the metallic and non-metallic resources.
